Some people have all the luck.
I’ve been buying lotto tickets on an off for the last couple of months, and can’t help feeling a little resentful when the FNB app congratulates me on my R5 winnings.
On the other hand, a lot of the people in South Africa who’ve taken home the millions really deserved it, like that domestic worker from Pretoria.
One bartender in Missouri, America, didn’t even need to buy a ticket to win. She just showed up at work, and did a decent job serving a regular customer.
Insider breaks it down:
Taylor Russey, 33, told the Missouri Lottery that a regular gave her a Powerball ticket on October 18, and that it won $50,000 in the subsequent night’s drawing.”
One of the regulars will buy the rest of the regulars in the bar Lottery tickets every now and then, especially when it’s high,” Russey said. “And he did that on Saturday – he bought all of us Lottery tickets.”
That’s the equivalent of roughly R750 000, by the way.
Russey realised that she had won after the bar’s lottery terminal notified staff that a winning ticket had been sold at their location.
Russey told Insider on Thursday that the customer who tipped her the ticket was the first person she called when she learned she had won.
“He was very happy for me … said that’s awesome and he’s sure I could use it right now,” Russey said.
She described him as a “super cool guy” who is “down to earth” and “just wants to see people happy and thriving.”
Russey says she’s going to use the money to get some dental work done (overshare), pay off some debt (standard), and invest the rest (smart).
She has no plans to quit her job. She says she’s not that kind of person.
To be fair, she didn’t win enough money to retire.
Take a holiday, at least, Russey – for those of us who didn’t win the lottery and need to live vicariously.
