South Africa is known for its selection of great wine.
We’re lucky like that.
Because we have such a great range and some of the best vineyards on the planet, even a moderately priced bottle can compete with some of the world’s best.
That’s my story, it suits my budget, and I’m sticking to it.
Although I’m no expert, I respect wine, so even if I can’t identify the subtle hints of sandalwood in a Merlot, I want to be able to drink it like a pro.
According to PW, no matter your skill level when it comes to wine, there are a few mistakes that nearly every wine drinker makes.
Here are five common mistakes to look out for, and how to get it right.
Stop Avoiding White Wine In Winter
I’m not guilty of this one. White wine is my drink of choice, and the trick is to switch it up in winter.
Instead of light, crisp wines, like a Sauvignon Blanc, drink an oaky Chardonnay, which should pair well with the rich hearty foods that you crave in winter.
You Don’t Buy Screw Tops
These days more and more winemakers are turning away from traditional corks. On the other hand, it depends on the wine. If you’re buying a bottle that you intend to age, stick to corks.
Best practice is to find something that hits the midway point. The Protea range from Rupert Wines comes with a ‘screw cork’. It looks good but is easy to remove and replace, with the added bonus that it comes in beautiful bottles designed to be upcycled.
You’re Probably Holding The Glass Wrong
Instead of wrapping your hand around the bowl of the glass, grip the base of the stem between your thumb and forefinger. It makes sense if you think about it. When you’re holding the bowl, you’re actually warming up your wine.
Let It Breathe
I know it’s hard. You’ve been thinking about that glass of wine all day, but if you’re having a glass of red, you should let it breathe first. Just uncork the bottle and let it sit for a good 15 to 30 minutes.
Patience is a virtue, after all.
Stop Hogging The Good Bottle At Parties
Seth tells the story of a bottle of Jean Roi that he smuggled into France, that was so popular with the locals that they couldn’t get enough of it.
If you’re that person at the party with a good bottle of wine, don’t hog it. Wine is meant to be shared.
Stock up wisely and you’ll always be that person with the good stuff. You’ll also have enough of it that you won’t feel like you’re losing out when everyone inevitably wants a taste.
Then pour yourself a glass, hold it the right way, and enjoy.
