When Meghan and Harry, the Duchess and Duke of Sussex, were in South Africa, they visited ‘Waves for Change’.
‘Waves for Change’ is an NGO that combines surfing with evidence-based mind and body therapy to help vulnerable young people.
It was founded by British surfer Tim Conibear back in 2009, when he started a small surfing club in Cape Town’s Masiphumelele township.
Red Bull has now made a short documentary about the NGO, which has grown significantly in the last 10 years, as part of a series titled I Am the Engine.
The South African west coast is the perfect location for the NGO recruits to bury their lifelong fear of the sea and take their nervous first steps into the water.
The weekly surf therapy lessons give local children the skills to cope with stress, regulate behaviour, build healing relationships and make positive life choices – something that impressive mentors Chemica Blau and Luxolo Ponco have both benefitted hugely from.
Let’s give it a watch:
Salute to all the fine people doing good work out there.
We see you.
