Yesterday, Donald Trump took a victory lap in the wake of US troops killing ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in Syria.
Whether you’re an American who loves or loathes Trump, you probably welcome that news, but the Syrian situation, on the whole, is far from any sort of resolution.
Over the past few weeks, Trump has removed troops from the border of Turkey and Syria, leading to criticism that he’s abandoned US Kurdish allies and given dictators like Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russia’s Vladimir Putin free reign in the area.
There’s also the small matter of the 100-plus ISIS prisoners who escaped thanks to that decision, having previously been captured by the Kurds.
The Syrian situation has many moving parts, so keeping up with it all can be rather tricky, but that’s where John Oliver comes in.
On his show, Last Week Tonight, Oliver ran through many of the reasons why Trump has come under fire, and why his latest rash decision points to further problems down the line.
Strap in, because the first 90 seconds alone is quite something to behold:
