Growing up, my favourite Carte Blanche episodes usually involved a business being caught taking advantage of consumers.
Sometimes it was a TV taken in for repairs to a number of shops, with just a wire snipped or a simple touch-up required, and then waiting for the quotes to roll in.
Derek, Devi, or one of the other presenters would promptly rock up and confront the business owner, who would bust out some pretty incredible excuses, or bolt as they realised their goose was cooked.
Well, the investigative team have gone old school with this segment:
It was meant to be a sweet deal – sell your vehicle at the best price to the dealer and use the money as a deposit for your next car – but some angry consumers say they’ve been duped by a family dealership in Gauteng. In this undercover investigation Carte Blanche untangles an intricate scam – where the same vehicle is sold to multiple buyers – leaving the clients out of pocket and… out of the driver’s seat.
If you’re pressed for time, and want the real kick in the teeth, skip ahead to the eight-minute mark.
Nothing like fleeing at the sight of cameras to destroy any semblance of credibility:
