“Hell is other people” should be amended to “hell is other people with Instagram accounts”.
The Bronx is a borough in New York. Of the five boroughs – which you can explore here – it has the fourth-largest area, fourth-highest population, and third-highest population density.
It’s also known for containing the poorest congressional district in the United States.
It saw a sharp decline in population, liveable housing, and quality of life in the late 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, culminating in a wave of arson.
In addition, the South Bronx saw severe urban decay. While it has experienced some redevelopment since the 1990s, its still home to some of the most underprivileged and disenfranchised people in New York.
So, why am I telling you this, and what does it have to do with Instagram?
A bunch of people are super amped about the Joker movie, part of which takes place in the Bronx, reports VICE.
What used to be a somewhat quiet spot at [address redacted for the protection of residents] in the Bronx, NY, has officially been invaded by some of the most questionable human beings on Earth: earnest Joker fans.
The long stairway located at that address has recently become a tourist attraction thanks to the Todd Philips film, which features a scene where Joaquin Phoenix, decked out in his Joker costume, dances down the stairs as “Rock and Roll, Part 2” by convicted pedophile and registered sex offender Gary Glitter plays.
Now, fans are flooding the Bronx to find the famous stairs and get that perfect Instagram shot denoting that they have seen a movie and liked it.
If you haven’t seen the film yet, enjoy this trailer, which starts with the Joker dancing on the stairs:
Cool. Now on to Instagram:
Then there’s this:
Senorita.xi’s bio is “Chasing Wanderlust”. I give up.
Oh, and let’s not forget the cosplayers and influencers:
The people who actually live in the Bronx aren’t thrilled with the attention:
Just another example of how infuriatingly silly influencers can be.
If you’re going to insist on taking a photo on those stairs, do everyone a favour and make a donation to a local youth programme or some other organisation that benefits the community.
Then post your picture guilt-free, and try your best not to point out that you deserve praise for your good deed.
