I’m of Irish descent, which means that funerals start out as formal affairs with a high Catholic Mass and quickly descend into chaos at the wake.
My great uncle’s wake ended with my middle-aged cousin passed out in a bowl of stew, while one of the other attendees painted his toenails.
At my grandfather’s wake, a family member arrived drunk and asked the priest if he’d “ever f*cked” before walking into a wall. The priest was a few whiskies in so he saw the humour in it.
The point I’m trying to make is that Irish funerals are different from regular funerals. The dead don’t usually get involved in the festivities, though.
Shay Bradley decided to change all that.
Here’s TIME:
Any excellent joke surprises the audience, and that was certainly the case when one man had the last laugh with an absurd twist at his own funeral.
Yes, he actually arranged for a pre-planned, posthumous comedy bit from beyond the grave that is lighting up the internet.
As people gathered on Saturday in Kilmanagh, Ireland to pay their respects to Shay Bradley, an Irish Defense Force veteran, the mood quickly turned from somber to jovial. That’s because attendants actually heard his voice screaming to let him out via a recording as his coffin was lowered into the ground.
Luckily someone captured it on camera. Take a look:
All I’m saying is, if that was the funeral, the wake must have been off the hook.
