Spare a thought for Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy.
Both footballers are now involved in a mess that has captivated the British public, who are clearly desperate for some kind of drama that doesn’t involve their harebrained politicians, through no real fault of their own.
In case you’ve thus far missed the story, Coleen Rooney outed Rebekah Vardy as having leaked stories about the Rooney family to British rag, The Sun.
She did so in a dramatic Instagram post that instantly spawned a thousand memes, but now Vardy is hitting back, and she’s hitting back hard.
I know, it’s stupid and nobody should care, but they do, and we’re giving them what they want.
Vardy has spoken with another British rag, the Daily Mail, and gone after Coleen in a big way. Here’s the dramatic opening:
The phone call, made very soon after Coleen Rooney’s bombshell accusations, was something Rebekah Vardy will never forget.
‘I said to her: “Coleen, what on earth have you done?”‘ Becky says.
‘It was not an easy phone call. She said to me: “I’m not pointing the finger” and I said: “You have just annihilated me in public and hung me out to dry. The whole world hates me!”
Only those who pay attention to this kind of shite, Rebekah, or Becky as she is also known.
When the Daily Mail’s writer asked if the two argued during the phone call, this gem came out:
Becky is careful not to explicitly denounce Coleen, but says: ‘That would be like arguing with a pigeon. You can tell it that you are right and it is wrong, but it’s still going to s*** in your hair.’
The British and their pigeon analogies.
Becky is currently seven months into her pregnancy, which has seen Coleen take some heat for the timing of her public outing, but Becky says the online trolls have been far harder on her:
‘Over 24 hours, this has escalated and escalated,’ she says. ‘I wasn’t going to say anything but it has gone so extreme. I have been told that I should die, that my children should die, my unborn child should die. It would be unacceptable for anyone.
‘I am tough, but this has made me cry. It is hard to explain how horrible it has been.’
Still on holiday in Dubai, Becky certainly sounds rattled, at one point breaking off from our conversation to weep.
Becky claims that multiple people, like those at the PR and advertising agencies she has used over the years, had access to her Instagram account, and has hired an expert in forensic cybersecurity to find out who may have been the leaker.
She’s also very critical of how Coleen has chosen to go about things:
‘I can tell you that I would never, ever have dealt with the situation in the way that Coleen has done, that’s for sure.’
…She is particularly mystified by Coleen’s motivation, saying: ‘It makes me wonder if there is more to this than meets the eye. For someone to go public with something like this, there has to be something bigger behind it.
‘I keep on thinking about it and trying to figure it out. It’s like trying to work out how someone does a magic trick. I don’t know what the reason is — if I had the answer I would be over the moon.
‘I don’t have any hatred or bitterness. She did what she thought was necessary. That was her decision and she will have to live with it.’
Asked whether Coleen should apologise, she responded by saying that ‘it’s gone beyond an apology, hasn’t it?’
Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.
