Please stop.
Celebrating the genitals of your unborn child with a gender reveal party really is rather weird, but people still insist on throwing these horrible parties in the most spectacular and ridiculous ways.
While nothing will ever beat the time an American couple enlisted the help of an alligator and a goo-filled watermelon to determine the sex of their spawn, the latest horrible gender reveal stunt comes to us from Durban.
Take it away, IOL:
A video of a Durban couple’s unusual gender reveal has gone viral on social media.
In the one-minute video posted on Dala U Crew the couple together with their son is seen standing on the pavement while they driver of a white VW Polo revs his engine before driving over refuse bags placed on the road.
You can watch the video to see what happens when the car drives over the black bags:
Spectacular stuff. I really do hope somebody cleaned that mess up once the stunt was over.
Also, fun fact – the person who started this madness 10 years ago with the first-ever gender reveal party admits that it’s a waste of time.
Jenna Karvunidis, a law student and blogger from Chicago wrote about her experience planning such a party online more than 10 years ago. However, since then her feelings have drastically shifted. In a Facebook post on her page called High Gloss and Sauce she recently opened up about being the person behind the viral trend.
Karvunidis actually finds Gender Reveals to be ridiculous. “Who cares what gender the baby is? I did at the time because we didn’t live in 2019 and didn’t know what we know now – that assigning focus on gender at birth leaves out so much of their potential and talents that have nothing to do with what’s between their legs.”
Here’s an idea: Take the money you would have spent on pink and blue powder, balloons, alligators and cars, and put it towards your kid’s college fund.
That way they can figure out their gender in their own time, and you can avoid looking like a doos on the internet.
