It’s been a while since I was building double Vodka-Red Bull pyramids on a Sunday evening at Café Caprice, but it seems time does tick on.
Caprice and 2oceansvibe are both 18 years old now, and the owners of both have produced children. And what a joy it is, taking one’s spawn to a place with such entrenched memories.
My little girl has been going to Caprice since she was born, but has no memory of it, as we moved to Constantia before her memory kicked in. She’s recently been nagging to go after hearing about it pretty often, so we cruised in a few Fridays ago to catch the SA versus Japan World Cup warm-up match on the way home after I picked her up from school.
What an absolute delight it was to sit outside in the sun with my angel, two milkshakes, and a couple of toasted sandwiches. If I was there during the World Cup proper, I might have made use of the specials, but I don’t really have to worry about that at my old haunt.
I bored her with stories of my heyday and had to be fairly creative when explaining why none of the waitresses knew me. That’s beside the fact that some were born while I was dancing on the bar counter at Caprice.
I have to say that Café Caprice is one of the most kid-friendly places you can visit in Cape Town. Because people can get a tad excited in front of the Atlantic Seaboard, all the flooring and cushions are ready for thrills and spills and are, therefore, essentially, childproof!
But when the tab came and she asked why I wasn’t paying with hard cash, and rather just scribbling on the receipt, that’s when she knew dadda still had some clout around these parts!
The circle is now complete and her Caprice journey has begun. In 12 years time, she better be strapped into her drone to bring her home not a minute after midnight on Sunday nights. Do you understand, young lady?!
Be sure to say hi to Uncle Monty at the bar!
