It’s not easy being a comedian these days.
Put a foot wrong, and you can end up being hauled over the coals, and it’s easy for a wisecrack to spread across social media and be taken out of context.
The social justice warriors, and keyboard warriors, are waiting to take you down, and every joke is a potential minefield.
Right, to be clear, that’s not what is happening here with Kevin Meyer who, according to his Instagram bio, is a “Comedian, a TV & Radio personality, a prankster”, and has appeared regularly on the MTV show, Guy Code.
He also loves life and “positive vibes”, although he does warn those who dare that he shares “hysterical dark humour”.
This is simply an analysis of what he deems to be comedy, and why he deserves the title of South Africa’s least funny comedian.
We’ve actually had a taste of his “dark humour” before, back in 2018, when he cracked a joke about the infamous Dros rape case. After being called out for his joke, he went off on a tirade, saying that people should “expect more where that came from”.
Kevin has at least been true to his word, and we popped past his Facebook profile recently to see what hilarious wisecracks he had to share with the world.
Note the dates on these posts (screenshots taken yesterday afternoon), because we really didn’t have to dig very deep:
So brave. He’s caught a little heat for that one, so he followed it up with this:
This is straight out of the playbook of the last time he was publicly criticised.
Somebody clearly alerted the Citizen, who then wrote this article about some of Kevin’s recent posts.
Your man took it in his stride like a pro:
You know what they say about a guy who has to talk about how big his penis is all the time, right?
Let’s get back to his recent posts:
Not sure I get where the joke is here?
Comedians who push boundaries and take risks by crafting layered jokes that provoke conversation? Sure, that’s free speech and all.
This? Nah, not for me.
Let’s see what other pearls of wisdom are lurking:
Kevin showing a deep understanding of the complex issues faced by the transgender community.
You want wheelchair jokes? You got it…
I think the funniest thing here is the exclamation mark and comma double up.
We’re about to see another interesting double up below, starting with this post on September 14:
And then this on September 13:
What makes these so intriguing is that on September 3, he was promoting that ‘Bring back the Death Penalty’ petition following the brutal rape and murder of Uyinene Mrwetyana:
I can only imagine what you would find on his phone if you checked the WhatsApp group chats he shares with his tjommies.
Anyway, back to the, um, jokes:
He liked this one so much he even turned it into a meme on Instagram:
That’s Kev with his pants down, simulating sex with an elephant. I don’t see the connection, either.
In fact, he’s amassed a decent amount of followers on Instagram with these memes:
Far more followers than he has on Twitter, at least.
On we soldier:
I think I’m beginning to see what Kev’s doing here. He’s working that shock comic angle, that edgelord vibe, but he’s missing one vital element – the presence of actual humour.
If you think I’m being unfair, fine. I will allow him one video attempt to make me laugh.
This was posted around five weeks ago, with the caption “#steelingshit #prank #candyflossbandit”.
Kev, it’s ‘stealing’, as in ‘you’re stealing a living if anybody is paying you to perform actual stand-up comedy’, but let the video speak for itself:
A real prank for the ages.
So many layers, so well constructed, such nuance.
I don’t know Kevin, and I’m not trying to get him ‘cancelled’. This isn’t the Cape Town Twitter scene, after all.
In fact, Kevin being punished for joking about homosexuals and transgendered people and disabled people and so on would just play into his narrative as a risqué comic who doesn’t care about this damn PC culture, bro, and anyone who disagrees is a cuck!
All of those groups above are fair game in comedy, provided you at least try and construct an intelligent joke.
(Rather than spell out why comedians who constantly talk about being victimised in this way need a reality check, I will just direct you to this superb piece of writing on the subject.)
I’m all for free speech, and boundaries being pushed, and risks being taken, but Kevin does not deliver the goods.
This is just an assessment of the public social media posts of someone who says they’re earning a living as a comedian and TV and radio personality.
Honestly, I’m not sure I have ever come across someone who calls themselves a ‘comedian’ who is as consistently unfunny as Kevin.
In fact, I’m certain I haven’t. If you have, please feel free to send their material our way (editor@2oceansvibe.com), and I will reconsider.
For now, though, Kevin Meyer gets my vote for South Africa’s least funny comedian, which I’m sure he will embrace with open arms.
Congrats, buddy.
