We’re nearing that time of the year when the tourists descend upon the Mother City, bringing with them that strong foreign currency and a propensity for realising they need sunscreen a little later than is probably necessary.
The city’s business owners certainly love having the tourists around, sunburnt or otherwise, and we really could use a bumper summer season.
For those who want to stay in De Waterkant or thereabouts, or if you’re the type who will be dishing out advice to friends headed our way, here are seven places worth calling home during a visit to Cape Town.
First up is the stunning Cartel House Hotel on Waterkant, run by Ideas Cartel, curators of luxury workspaces, exclusive events, private members clubs and lounges and, of course, hotels.
71 Waterkant has three rooms – the Yellow Room, the Navy Room, and the Teal Room – and each has a unique feel.
The Navy Room, for example:
More than just a room, your stay includes complimentary breakfast at Hemelhuijs restaurant on the ground floor, as well as access to our Cartel Members Club lounges and bars, and Inner City coworking spaces across our three locations (71 Waterkant, 113 Loop Street and 1 Sand Hill Road).
Rent a room, and gain access to all the perks that come with being part of the Cartel Members Club – very nice.
Next up is De Waterkant Cottages:
Within 25 minutes’ walking distance of the city center or less, De Waterkant Cottages include a range of 1 to 5-bedroom properties. All come with a fully equipped kitchen, an outdoor area, and a living area with a satellite TV.
Then there’s De Waterkant House:
In the heart of the historical De Waterkant Village, is De Waterkant House. An elegant and discreet boutique guest house with a relaxed European feel. This beautifully restored, nine roomed Cape Georgian Manor House, with a beautiful terrace and pool, overlooks the village and the Table Bay Harbour.
How about the Purple House?
Purple House offers a stylish B&B and self-catering accommodations, located in De Waterkant and Cape Town’s city centre, suitable for 1 to 18 persons.
Number five is the Molo Lolo Lodge:
Located in the City Bowl, on the edge of Bo-Kaap and De Waterkant, Molo Lolo Lodge is a beautiful Cape Dutch style house, which offers a superb roof terrace with a 360 ° view of Signal Hill, Table Mountain and the city centre.
Number six is Jarvis House:
The rooms in the bed and breakfast are fitted with a flat-screen TV. With a private bathroom equipped with a bath or shower and free toiletries, some rooms at Jarvis House also provide guests with a patio.
Finally, to round off the options here’s Harbouredge Apartments:
The apartments are elegantly furnished, and come equipped with a fully equipped kitchen leading into an open-plan lounge and dining room. The bathrooms include bathtubs and a separate shower.
There you have it – seven options to rest your head in De Waterkant.
Sure, feel free to bookmark this list and send it to those visitors you aren’t willing to have in the spare room.
Most importantly, and I really can’t stress this enough, wear sunscreen.
