If you land yourself in a prison, like Pollsmoor, you’re probably not going to be living your best life.

Others are a little more chill. Take Durban’s Westville Prison, for example.

The prison came into the spotlight after two videos emerged, showing convicted killer Ruwain Meer living it up.

Cocaine, dancing – his jail cell party had it all.

Word to the wise, though. If you’re going to throw a prison party you probably shouldn’t film it because cellphones and drugs are, generally speaking, contraband.

Since then, it looks like the prison warders at Westville are trying to up their game a bit.

They made their own video, starring correctional services minister Ronald Lamola and members of the correctional services department’s Emergency Support Teams (EST), showing a recent raid on the prison.

Overall, the raid resulted in the confiscation of 25 cellphones, 16 chargers, five sets of earphones, 65 dagga slopes, two dagga pipes, six SIM cards, one USB stick and R390 in cash.

…Lamola said warders were part of the problem of illegal items being smuggled into South Africa’s prisons.

“There is obviously collusion between the officials and the inmates, and this we are looking into very closely. That is why we have also introduced the process to also search the officials,” he said, adding that prison officials were searched before the start of every shift and before their shifts ended.

The prisoners had some pretty creative hiding spots. Take a look:

The department is in the process of installing full-body scanners at correctional facilities, something that needed to be commissioned by the Department of Health before being implemented.

The raid did nothing to deter prisoners or their guests on visitors day.

Despite Lamola on Friday appealing to members of the community who frequent correctional facilities to work together with the department, just two days after the raid a woman was bust trying to smuggle 200 “heroin” tablets into the facility in her underwear.

Underwear heroin does not sound like a good time.
