We heard the rumours a couple of weeks back.
Adam Sandler, the guy who brought you the rap ‘Phone, Wallet, Keys’ about stuff you take with you when you leave the house, apparently gave an Oscar-worthy performance in a film called Uncut Gems.
It’s not the first time Sandler has been pegged as a potential Oscar contender. He was snubbed for his critically acclaimed performance in 2017’s The Meyerowitz Stories, but early reviews and a look at the trailer for Uncut Gems suggests he might have a second shot at the gold statue.
The New York Post is calling his performance “no joke”, and The Daily Beast agrees, running the headline ‘Yes, Adam Sandler Might Win an Oscar This Year’.
We’ll head over to Esquire for some background on the film:
The film, which stars Adam Sandler, Kevin Garnett, and Idina Menzel, follows Sandler’s character Howard Ratner after he makes a risky bet that could land him a massive fortune. In the trailer, it appears he’s moving sports bets around New York City with a bit of insider information in his back pocket. The only issue is that his grand plan puts his business, family relationships, and safety at risk.
The film initially premiered at Telluride Film Festival late last month, where critics showered it with massive acclaim. Sandler, in particular, netted a whole bunch of positive feedback, with more than a few saying that this role could spell the Oscar nomination he’s been looking for. Though he was nominated for a Golden Globe for Punch-Drunk Love, an Oscar nomination has still eluded Sandler, despite a number of critically acclaimed dramatic performances.
Let’s watch a serious Sandler in action:
Adam Sandler winning an Oscar sounds ridiculous until you remember that Sandra Bullock won one for The Blind Side.
You can catch Uncut Gems in cinemas on December 13.
