Sometimes, it takes an act of unspeakable brutality to shock a country into action, and the murder of 19-year-old UCT student Uyinene Mwretyana managed to do that.
Nene, as she was known to her friends, was murdered inside a post office in Claremont. Coming in the wake of other high-profile femicides and a rise in gender-based violence across the country, South African womxn began to ask #AmINext?
Around the country, those who have had enough took to the streets to demand urgent and decisive action over high rape and murder rates.
Our work is far from done, and the fight against gender-based violence must continue, but it is worth looking back at how Nene’s murder sparked such a reaction.
News24 has put together a 13-minute video documenting what will hopefully be remembered as a pivotal few weeks in our country’s history. At some point today, if not right now, find the time to watch it.
Remember the emotions you felt when you took to the streets, or social media, and let’s ensure this fight continues.
