It’s official – the royals you’ve been diligently keeping up with for the past couple of months have touched down on South African soil.
Their flight was pretty interesting. They decided to abandon the private jet and fly commercial.
This probably has a lot to do with the criticism they received after they visited Elton John in August.
Of course, ‘commercial’ for the Duke and Duchess means something a little bit different from how we understand it.
Here’s CNN:
There’s little need to take a private jet with the VIP services offered by both airlines and airports around the world. Celebrities, politicians and royalty can fly commercial without their fellow passengers being aware of their presence.
It tends to happen on long haul flights, says Carolyn Addison, head of product at luxury travel company Black Tomato. Where a private jet within Europe costs around $25,000, flying London to Los Angeles would top $125,000. Few A-listers can stretch to that.
In other words, if you were on a British Airways flight from England this morning you might have been sharing it with royalty.
Meghan and Harry begin their 10-day trip to the African continent in Cape Town.
This will also be little Archie’s first trip to South Africa where he’ll stay with mom, Meghan, when Harry goes off to visit other African countries including Malawi, Botswana, and Angola.
You can take a look at their full itinerary here.
We were also treated to a rare snap of baby Archie when the Royals arrived at Cape Town International earlier today:
According to The Mirror, the Sussexes landed almost 40 minutes late after their British Airways flight was delayed leaving the UK.
Yeah, when flying commercial, not even millions in bank will save you from a delayed flight.
Meghan will be making a speech tackling the pertinent subject of violence against women in South Africa during a visit to a township in Cape Town later today.
UPDATE: Meghan and Harry arrive at an education workshop in Nyanga, a township on the outskirts of Cape Town.
Meghan and Harry are wasting no time on their trip. Their first stop is an education workshop in one of Cape Town’s townships. From there they’ll move on to the District Six museum.
Here they are in Nyanga:
