Since he was put in the naughty corner for abusing Twitter, Elon hasn’t been tweeting anything too out of line.
He was feuding with Pablo Escobar’s brother for a while over flame throwers, but that seems to have died down.
Now he spends his time decorating cookies with children, musing about satellites, and – oh – tweeting about how we’re all going to die when an asteroid, or “big rock” as he calls it, collides with Earth.
This particular tweet was sent into the world in response to another by comedian Joe Rogan, who shared an article reporting that NASA has begun preparations for the 1 100-foot-wide asteroid Apophis, which is scheduled to pass by Earth on April 13, 2029, reports CNN.
Apophis was the Egyptian god of death, so that’s comforting.
Here’s Elon’s tweet:
He’s not wrong about holding off on panic for the time being.
Apophis is going to miss us by 19,000 miles. It’s rare that such a large object will be this close, so NASA scientists will take the opportunity to observe surface details and other things that may help with planetary defense.
The part about us having no defence against an asteroid hit is what has got NASA’s attention.
NASA’s website, though, clearly says, “No known asteroid poses a significant risk of impact with Earth over the next 100 years.”
Lindley Johnson, of NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office, reiterated that stance in a statement.
“While no known asteroid larger than 140 meters in size has a significant chance of hitting Earth for the next 100 years, NASA and its partners are studying several different methodologies for deflecting a hazardous asteroid,” he said.
In other words, if an asteroid is threatening to collide with Earth, scientists are sure they’ll have the technology to deal with it.
Good to know. Like a real-world version of Armageddon, but hopefully without Ben Affleck.
Elon – stick to satellites and space tourism. The same goes for cookie decorating:
