Earlier this year, I wrote about how I kind of fudged summer by coming late to the party on a couple of things.
Firstly, I spent way too much time indoors, which I’m regretting now that this winter’s weather has given me cabin fever.
Secondly, the news that there are alcoholic popsicles out there somehow didn’t reach me until March.
This year will be different.
I know it’s only August, but I plan on hitting spring and summer fully armed with the info (and the popsicles) that I need to make the most out of my city and everything it has to offer.
And because I’m a giver, I’m going to share it all with you.
Here are, in my humble opinion, the five best picnic spots in Cape Town.
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden
Can you even call yourself Capetonian if you haven’t had a picnic at Kirstenbosch Gardens?
It’s famous for its incredibly diverse fauna and that massive tree that’s always full of children.
You know the one.
There’s no end of green sprawling lawn and trees to choose from, making it the perfect family picnic spot. It’s a lot of fun with a group of friends as well.
Signal Hill
This one is my personal favourite.
Leave the kids and other worries at home, grab a group of friends, and head on up to Signal Hill for a sunset picnic.
It’s the perfect spot for wine and bubbles, although you could also swap out those toots for a Frost Popsicles non-alcoholic option if you’re teetotalling.
We’re talking pomegranate, grapefruit & hibiscus, we’re talking peach, strawberry & banana, and we’re talking vanilla coffee.
The vanilla coffee popsicle is made with milk powder and a delicious gourmet coffee blend infused with real Madagascan vanilla, and will tick all the boxes for those who dig ice coffees.
Makes those ‘OcSober’ and ‘No-Booze November’ months all the more bearable, too.
Table Mountain
On a sunny day, hop on the cable car and spend the day enjoying our famous mountain.
At R330 a ticket return (for adults), the cable car can be a tad pricey, but well worth it for that view from the top. Remember, you also get to go for free on your birthday.
Once you’re up there, expect to find over 1 500 plant species and panoramic views of Cape Town and surrounds.
If you want to skip the cable car, you could hike up Skeleton Gorge, Platteklip Gorge, or Nursery Ravine with your picnic gear.
Silvermine Nature Reserve
Silvermine is part of the Table Mountain National Park. It has a large, beautiful reservoir for you to picnic alongside.
Other activities include mountain biking, bird watching, rock climbing and hiking for those of you who like to keep it active.
Buffels Bay and Bordjiesdrif at Cape Point
Cape Point is the most southwesterly tip of Africa and boasts some of the highest sea cliffs and freshest ocean air in the world.
You can also catch a glimpse of some of Cape Town’s wildlife, like chacma baboons, Cape mountain zebra, and more than 250 species of birds.
You’ll find individual braai spots and white sands if you’re after a beach day. Bordjiesdrif has grassy patches for a more traditional picnic.
There you have it – picnic spots sorted.
If you’re keen to get your hands on some Frost Popsicles, you can see the full range on their online store.
Added bonus – stock up now and you’ll get 25% off all popsicles.
Bring on spring and summer!
