In news that will come as a surprise to absolutely nobody that follows tennis, Nick Kyrgios is behaving like a wanker again.
He copped a big fine at this year’s Wimbledon for unsportsmanlike conduct, and also stormed off the court back in May when things didn’t go his way.
This time around, we’re looking at his feud with umpire Fergus Murphy at the Cincinnati Masters, which landed him a $AU167 000 (around R1,7 million) fine.
The Guardian reports:
Kyrgios flared up at the end of the second set and never regained his composure, breaking two rackets during a bathroom break Murphy had refused him permission to take, before appearing to call the umpire a “fucking tool” at the conclusion of the match…
A suspension could impact his ability to compete at the US Open although it is unclear whether the tournament organisers would honour the suspension if it is handed down.
Those of you with children may recognise some of this behaviour:
A fine example to set for young tennis fans around the world.
Again, it’s what he does:
He had clashed with the Irish official [Murphy] two weeks ago at the Washington Open and was also fined by the ATP after being embroiled in an expletive-ridden rant with Murphy at the Queen’s Club Wimbledon warm-up tournament in June.
The latest fines included five charges of unsportsmanlike conduct totalling $US85,000, $US20,000 for verbal abuse, $US5,000 for audible obscenity and $US3,000 for leaving the court.
“The ATP is looking further into what happened during and immediately after the match to see if additional action is warranted under the player major offence section of the code,” the ATP said. “That could result in an additional fine and/or suspension.”
Kyrgios is ranked 27th in the world, and his 2019 winnings alone (before tax and fines) amount to US$1,1 million.
In other words, unlike some South African golfers, he does boast a bank account that matches his ego.
For those who prefer to watch two of tennis’ finest competitors enjoying a laugh, here’s Roger and Rafa unable to hold it together.
