Meghan Cremer’s murder has really hit home for many South Africans, especially women, and it’s clear from the outpouring of emotion at yesterday’s private memorial service that she was loved by many.
Cremer’s body was found last week on a farm in Philippi, with three suspects – Jeremy Sias, 27, Charles Daniels, 39, and Shiraaz Jaftha, 34 – taken into custody.
Lize Hartley, a fellow rider at the Vaderlandsche Rietvlei Stables, where everyone gathered yesterday, spoke with News24 about how Meghan would like to be remembered:
TimesLIVE reports that Meghan had four passions in life – “horses, ice cream, her nephew and Christmas”:
Cremer’s mother Gill, flanked by family and friends, attended the moving service where congregants spoke of Cremer’s generosity, love for animals, sense of fun and fierce loyalty towards those she loved.
“She loved to bring joy into people’s lives,” said one of the mourners.
A close friend quoted from Harry Potter – Cremer was a fan: “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of places if one only remembers to turn on the lights.”
“I think we need to remember the light moments of Meghan and try and put aside … the horrible things that have taken place, and remember her for the good she used to do,” said the friend.
“To have been loved so deeply, even though the person who loved us is gone, will give us some protection forever. I’m going to leave it just like that. In memory of my friend,” said another mourner.
It really is gut-wrenching, and if you feel like you’ve had enough, you’re not alone.
A Facebook group, SA Women Fight Back, launched a petition opposing bail for the three men suspected of her murder, with more than 60 000 people signing.
That petition will be handed over today at Athlone Magistrates Court, where the suspects are appearing.
Representatives from SA Women Fight Back are present, with this image taken by EWN’s Lauren Isaacs:
Enough is enough, with women in this country living under the constant threat of violence.
PSA – if you’re a man who isn’t calling out other men on their bullshit, and you’re not actively participating in creating a safer environment for this country’s women, you’re part of the problem.
Our sincere condolences to Meghan’s friends and family.
