The Ndlovu Youth Choir were quick to show the competition at the auditions for America’s Got Talent that they were not here to play with their rendition of Vicky Sampson’s African Dream.
They then went on to wow to judges and everyone else with their own spin on the Shakira / Freshlyground 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem, Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).
That performance secured them a place in the live rounds, which they killed, and now they’re off to the finals.
Want to know a little bit more about the choir? Here’s TimesLIVE:
The 24 members of the choir who were selected to go will hope to attract the most votes from viewers when they perform on August 20 for a TV audience of millions. The two-part final will air live in the US on September 17 and 18, with the winning act bagging $1m (about R15m) and the opportunity to flaunt its talent at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
Their costumes for the finals have been carefully crafted and are ready to go.
Tucked in their suitcases will be the colourful beaded outfits that became part of their act as they sang and danced their way into the top 36 teams to compete in the hugely popular televised talent show.
In the dusty Moutse village in Dennilton, local women dubbed the “Gucci Gogos”, under the guidance of local beadmaker Sarah Masango, designed and added the bead creations to the outfits, hoping to spur the youngsters on to great success on the world stage.
Musical director, Ralf Schmitt, is giving nothing away about the songs that the choir will be singing in the final round.
As an aside, he also features in this video of the Rustenburg School Choir covering Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody – see if you can spot him.
The choir first made their way to the auditions for America’s Got Talent after the producers of the show found their cover of Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You on YouTube and decided to fly them over to compete.
