Deepfakes are a classic example of why we can’t have nice things.
If you’re late to the party, deepfakes can be used to put anyone’s face onto anyone’s body. Naturally, people used this to create a number of pretty convincing porn videos of celebrities, including Gal Gadot and Taylor Swift.
Now there’s this video of Bill Hader on an old episode of The Late Show with David Letterman from 2008, courtesy of deepfake creator ‘Ctrl Shift Face‘.
Before we watch the video, however, here’s some info from Mashable so that you can prepare yourself.
While discussing a table read of the 2008 flick Tropic Thunder, Hader brings up Tom Cruise, and his face seamlessly transforms to Cruise’s. It’s hardly noticeable at first, but as Hader continues the story and peppers it with impressions of Seth Rogen and Cruise, his faces switches to the different celebrities.
Take a look, with things really getting weird from around the 50-second mark, and Rogen ‘appearing’ around 1:50:
If your brain hurts, you’re not alone.
Tom Cruise is terrifying enough when he isn’t taking over Bill Hader’s face.
The really scary thing here, though, is just how far the technology behind deepfakes has come.
It feels like one of those things we should kill with fire before it takes over.
