You expect to encounter a few bad drivers or out of control taxis en route to Hermanus.
You can expect to encounter that pretty much anywhere in South Africa.
The latest wave of crime hitting the streets, however, is far more dangerous.
Over the last while, there have been a number of reported incidents of petrol bombings and rock-throwing.
In June, Bernard Groenewald died of his injuries after being petrol bombed on the N1, near Touws River. In May, Christopher Kgomo was killed on the N1 near De Doorns in the Western Cape when a boulder was thrown through his window.
Also in June, a truck was set alight on the N2. Last week, a truck driver broke his collarbone while trying to escape his truck after it was petrol-bombed, also on the N2.
Before moving on to the most recent attack, here’s News24 with more on last week’s incident:
Lwandle police were investigating a case of malicious damaged to property, Captain FC van Wyk said.
It is alleged that the driver and his passenger were driving on the N2 in the direction to Grabouw when unknown persons threw a petrol bomb through the passenger window, he said.
“Luckily the petrol bomb did not explode and no one sustained any injuries,” van Wyk said.
On Saturday, a truck assistant suffered burn wounds to his face and hand after a bread truck was petrol-bombed on the corner of the N2 and Onverwacht Street in Lwandle.
Then, last night, the N2 at Somerset West was closed briefly after a petrol bomb and stones were thrown at a car, reports IOL.
City of Cape Town Law Enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason said two drivers injured during the stone-throwing had to be taken hospital.
The petrol bomb thrown at a car caused minor damage, while tyres were also set alight. The SAPS were monitoring the area last night.
At this stage, it’s unclear whether the incidents are linked to service delivery protests or just random acts of violence.
Either way, stay safe and alert out there.
