I get the feeling that, for many people, utilising Adolf Hitler as a comedic tool will never sit well.
Clearly, the writer, director, and star of Jojo Rabbit, Taika Waititi, isn’t one of them.
The New Zealander has risen to prominence following the success of movies like What We Do in the Shadows (since turned into a series) and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and there’s certainly a fair amount of buzz around his latest offering.
Let’s get some write-up via the teaser trailer:
Writer director Taika Waititi (THOR: RAGNAROK, HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE), brings his signature style of humor and pathos to his latest film, JOJO RABBIT, a World War II satire that follows a lonely German boy (Roman Griffin Davis as JoJo) whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic.
Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi), Jojo must confront his blind nationalism.
Surprised they didn’t give Scarlett Johansson the role of Hitler. She seems to play everything else.
Let’s see Adolf crack a joke, then:
Like we said, interesting.
More info on the film from IndieWire:
“Jojo Rabbit” is set to world-premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this September before Fox Searchlight opens the film in the fray of awards season on October 18…
Rounding out the supporting cast are Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, “Game of Thrones” Emmy nominee Alfie Allen and “Extras” star/producer Stephen Merchant. The film is based on Christine Leunens’ 2008 novel “Caging Skies.”
Someone was always going to resurrect the ‘Hitler Reacts’ meme, and I’m sure Waititi didn’t mind.
The film’s official Twitter account went on to share it as well:
