UPDATE: The memorial service has finished, and can be watched in full below…
Since the news of Johnny Clegg’s passing broke, many South Africans have had at least one of his songs stuck in their head.
I’ve been juggling between Scatterlings Of Africa and Asimbonanga, if you must know, and Carte Blanche’s touching tribute didn’t exactly help matters.
Clegg’s family held a private ceremony the day after his passing, and today the country, and the world, get their chance to bid a true South African icon goodbye.
The memorial service is being held at the Sandton Convention Centre and is open to the general public, with the doors having opened at 11:30AM.
His manager, Roddy Quin, told EWN that “there’ll be some people paying tribute to him and there’ll be his band, the Soweto Gospel Choir and some other artists paying tribute to him”.
UPDATE: The memorial service has concluded. You can watch the full service below, including a touching tribute by his son, Jesse (27 minutes in), and a number of local musicians performing The Crossing (one hour and 20 minutes in).
Farewell, Johnny:
