Jimmy Kimmel and Matt Damon have been feuding in public for close to 15 years, and their light-hearted banter has always been worth a good laugh.
Also, please make sure you’re saying Matt Damon’s name in the Team America voice.
It all started during the third season of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, when Jimmy was trying to recover from a show that hadn’t gone exactly to plan.
With the help of TIME, let’s map out the duelling duo’s backstory:
“We had a bad show…The guests were bad, and I was feeling pretty bad about myself at the end of the program,” Kimmel told NPR in 2013. “And I decided to say, for the amusement of one of our producers who was standing next to me…’I want to apologize to Matt Damon. We ran out of time’…And he got a kick out of it, the producer, so I just started doing it every night to amuse him.”
The bit stuck, people enjoyed it, and the wheels of the feud were set in motion.
Then, in 2006, Damon was invited to appear on Kimmel’s show. Around the 35-second mark, you can guess what happened:
The next few years saw some back and forth, but when Kimmel’s then-girlfriend, Sarah Silverman, entered the picture, it became something that people really looked forward to.
You may remember this song – skip to 2:20 for the opening chords:
Kimmel was keen to hit Damon where it hurt, so he enlisted the help of his best bud, Ben Affleck:
There was the 2010 Handsome Men’s Club incident (Kimmel was voted out, and it was revealed that Damon was the mastermind behind his eviction), which further established the feud, and then Damon’s ultimate revenge in 2013:
Two years later, they sought help when they attended a couple’s therapy session (doing so again a year later), but that was clearly unsuccessful.
Enter Damon’s attack ad against Kimmel, and then a public showdown at the 2016 Emmy Awards:
When Kimmel hosted the 2017 Oscars, he made a point of singling out Damon for some abuse:
“Matt could have starred in Manchester by the Sea…He could have taken that lead actor part for himself, but he didn’t. He gave that role to Casey Affleck, his childhood friend,” Kimmel jokingly praised. “He handed what turned out to be an Oscar-caliber role over to his friend and made a Chinese ponytail movie instead. And that movie, The Great Wall, went on to lose $80 million.”
Damon responded to the affront by attempting to trip Kimmel as he walked through the audience.
Kimmel didn’t stop there, either:
There’s more – so much more, which you can see here – but I think the point has been made.
We will finish with one of their recent tussles, back in May, with Kimmel enlisting the help of Tom Brady:

Long may the rivalry continue.
Also, its always nice to see American public figures with the ability to laugh at themselves once in a while.
