Acne is one of those things that everyone experiences at some point in their lives.
For some, though, it’s a lot worse than just a pimple or two once or twice a month.
Even if you managed to get your acne under control, it can result in scarring.
In the simplest terms, scars form at the site of an injury to tissue, and are the visible reminders of injury and tissue repair.
The type of scarring you have is dependent on a number of factors including your skin type and the root cause of the scarring.
The different types of scarring include:
- Ice-pick scars are acne scars associated with loss of tissue which usually occurs on the cheeks. They are usually small with a somewhat jagged edge and steep sides – like wounds from an ice pick.
- Keloidal acne scars, which are raised and thickened scars, usually occur in the darker skin type patients. These scars are best treated with intralesional steroids, Titan infrared light, Laser Genesis and Carboxytherapy treatments
- Rolling scars are the most common and most disfiguring form of acne scars. They are soft scars, superficial, or deep, and are soft to the touch. They have gently sloping rolled edges that merge with normal skin. They are usually small, and either circular or linear in shape. These scars respond best to skin needling.
- The Boxcar Acne scar is a depressed fibrotic scar that is usually quite large with sharp edges and steep sides. The base of these scars is firm to the touch. Ice-pick scars may evolve into depressed fibrotic scars over time. Dermal fillers can improve the appearance of these scars.
- PIH, or Post Inflammatory Pigmentation, is discolouration of the skin at the site of a healed or healing inflamed acne lesion. It occurs more frequently in people with darker skin, but occasionally is seen in people with lighter skin.
