Finally – proof that fishing isn’t as relaxing as everyone makes it out to be.
A group of people aboard the Columbia Sportfishing boat in Cape Cod in the US got more than they bargained for when a great white shark jumped out of the water to eat a bass that was being reeled in.
To be fair to the shark, they are technically taking food from its home. I’d also be angry if someone marched into my kitchen and made off with my dinner.
Captain Marc Costa described the shark encounter to The Boston Herald:
“It had come up and it lunged out of the water and bit the fish, meanwhile swinging its tail up and out of the water,” said Costa. “The shark bit the fish in half, and he took it off the line,” said Costa.
Costa said the shark actually hit the boat following the “big heavy strike” on the fish. Costa said it has happened on his boat at least four times before.
“There have been some close takes … but nothing as acrobatic as that,” said Costa.
The best part is that a charter guest named Doug Nelson got it on tape:
He got it on video, guys. I repeat – he got it on video.
A final word from Costa:
“It was exciting and scary and exhilarating and kind of surreal,” said Costa, who said the incident happened about 3 miles west of Wellfleet.
It’s also funny.
That kid won’t be leaning over the side of a boat again any time soon.
