Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry have been receiving a lot of bad press following their continued insistence on privacy.
Diana’s biographer has even stepped in to draw comparisons between Diana’s and Meghan’s attitude to public life.
Piers Morgan also offered his opinion, but he’s a trash person, so it doesn’t count for much.
This tension between the Sussexes and the media is in part responsible for what happened below, after video footage emerged of Meghan’s exchange with Pharrell Williams at the premiere of The Lion King.
Here it is:
A lot of people are using the above to suggest that Meghan is struggling to cope with royal life.
UK papers have used the exchange as an excuse to attack Meghan, with the Mirror, for example, saying she was “moaning about life in the public eye”.
The Daily Beast has a different interpretation:
In fact, Meghan said or implied nothing about being “in the public eye,” nor did Pharrell, as the clip clearly shows.
While her unguarded comment clearly shows she has struggled to adapt to her new role, it seems likely that Pharrell was praising, in her marriage to Harry, the arrival of the first biracial woman in the British royal family as symbol of tolerance, and Meghan was responding to that.
She might not be talking about the royal family at all. In fact, she could be referring to the hoards of internet trolls who took issue with her marriage to Harry.
Maybe she’s referring to the media and their insistence that she’s not fitting in.
Either way, this is probably why the royals usually don’t say much on public outings.
