In the advertising world, sex sells, and in the current media climate, so does Donald Trump.
He graces covers of magazines (perhaps ‘graces’ is the wrong word), he dominates cable news coverage (it’s true that CNN is in the midst of what’s bordering on ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’), and some of his stranger tweets are already the stuff of legend.
So, what happens when New York Magazine decides not to mention him at all in their July 8 to July 21 edition?
Well, his name still lands on the bloody cover:
I would have gone with a melting ice-cream and an orange hair jutting out, and removed Trump’s name, but that’s just me.
When announcing their Trump-free issue on Instagram, New York Magazine had this to say:
Our new Trump-free issue is instead packed with stories like Jessica Pressler with a behind-the-scenes look at the battle for Grace Church, as Brooklyn’s oldest nursery school tries to become a little less old-fashioned, while its students’s parents act like high schoolers; John H. Richardson profiling Ben Crump, the lawyer who has represented the families of Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown Jr., Tamir Rice, Alesia Thomas, and Terence Crutcher, and worked on many less notorious Black Lives Matter cases; and Irin Carmon putting a spotlight on Shari Redstone, who is now sitting at the top of a $30 billion media empire.
When pressed on how the issue came about, David Haskell, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, elaborated on Huffington Post:
“As we were assembling the issue, we realized to our astonishment — and, a little bit, our relief — that the president was not the subject of any of our articles,” he said. “That seemed momentous, and something our readers might in fact appreciate.”
But Haskell reassured readers worried about getting their next Trump fix. “Fear not,” he said. “We have lots more about Trump in the works.”
Sjoe, because there’s just not enough coverage of Trump’s every move out there.
I wonder how long it will be before POTUS rage tweets about the ‘failing’, ‘loser’, ‘stupid’ magazine.
