Rehabilitation centres have a dark history of not always helping in the way that they’re supposed to.
If you’re suffering from drug addiction and don’t have R100 000 to drop on a luxury rehab stay, you could end up in Noupoort.
Judging from past news reports, that’s not a good place to be.
We also often hear stories about how difficult it is to live with a drug-addicted family member, and it’s the families of addicts that a former drug addict turned conman is targeting.
Carte Blanche recently reported on “Drug Squad”, a fake organisation run by the aforementioned conman, which is preying on desperate parents who believe that they are doing what’s best for their kids:
…we investigate a man who is swindling families out of thousands of Rands when they are already at their lowest ebb. A reformed drug addict, this conman now works under the banner of “Drug Squad” – but Carte Blanche shows that his arrests are fake, his court orders are phony and he may well be guilty of kidnapping, after forcibly taking addicts from their homes.
It’s exposés like this that make us appreciate the good work the show does:
