It might seem like Wayne Rooney has been around forever, but the Englishman is only 33 years old.
Sure, he traded the high intensity of the English Premier League for the less taxing US Major League Soccer, but he’s still capable of a long-range strike to rival the best in the world.
He’s been a massive hit since joining DC United last year, and goals like the one below will only help cement his iconic status with fans.
With just 10 minutes on the clock during DC’s MLS clash with Orlando City on Wednesday night, Rooney spotted Orlando goalkeeper Brian Rowe off his line.
Given that this is the third time he has scored from inside his own half during his career, you know what happens next:
It’s less enjoyable with the American commentary, but what a strike.
Via TalkSPORT, Rooney was understandably stoked:
“I spotted the ‘keeper maybe a couple minutes before we scored and I’d seen that he was quite high,” said Rooney, whose sensational strike sealed a 1-0 victory for DC.
“I knew if the ball fell to me near the halfway line, then the opportunity would be there for me to shoot it.
“He was probably a bit further out than normally because they were in possession of the ball, and it was through them losing it that it fell straight into my path. I knew immediately I was going to shoot it and, thankfully, I got it right.”
That he did.
Whilst some footballers have been accused of heading to the US to cash cheques and take it easy (Andrea Pirlo, for example), Rooney’s been a huge boost for DC United.
When he arrived last year, his team were bottom of the Eastern Conference, but a massive turnaround saw them reach the playoffs.
This year, they are third in the Eastern Conference table after 18 games, and Rooney is the team’s top scorer on nine.
