I can only imagine the carnage that must have ensued on the neighbourhood Facebook and WhatsApp groups.
Rotorua resident Susan Gedye woke up at 2AM to some serious “shaking and jolting”, and at first, she thought it was an earthquake.
Given that New Zealand has its fair share of those, that was a reasonable response.
After heading downstairs, she noticed that the kitchen window was all steamed up, which led to the discovery of a mud-spurting geyser in her backyard.
Via the Guardian, here’s the footage she captured:
I will never get enough of the Kiwi accent.
In case you didn’t listen to the chap towards the end of the video, here’s more info:
Rotorua is known as a tourist hotspot for good reason. It is home to geothermal mud pools which bubble up and shoot geysers high into the air, giving parts of the town a sulphurous smell…
The volcanic activity resulted in a large crater on her front lawn with the thermal pool throwing boiling mud 10m into the air.
Authorities also found a sinkhole under Gedye’s kitchen meaning her family, including two children, have been forced to move out.
Thankfully, everyone was moved before injury could occur, although the house will never be liveable again.
