If you enjoy earning Vitality points, you might want to check on Discovery’s new rules.
The company grabbed headlines when news of the Vitality Purple programme did the rounds, but their latest announcement has proven far less popular.
For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, here’s a breakdown:
If you are a Vitality member, you can use your fitness watch to measure your steps, heart rate and running distance, and earn points for meeting your fitness goals.
Unfortunately, a lot of people have just discovered that their fitness watch is no longer compatible with the Vitality points system.
TimesLIVE with the details:
Dutch company TomTom exited SA in 2017. At the beginning of the year, no one with a TomTom watch could link to the Vitality points system, but Vitality still recognised users who had watches.
Now Vitality has announced it will no longer give points to users who track their steps, heart rate and exercise with a TomTom sports watch.
Some people have spent up to R4 000 on a TomTom watch and they are not happy about the change.
“I hate to moan, but I really do think we deserve an explanation as to why TomTom devices won’t be compatible with Vitality anymore,” said Vitality member Lauren Moore.
“A few years ago, when you removed devices, you used the excuse that they weren’t secure enough and the data could not be verified. What exactly has changed regarding the TomTom devices … aside from them not being sold any more?” she asked on Facebook.
“I have been on Vitality for almost 10 years, and it seems like, year after year, benefits keep getting removed or become harder and harder to attain. Thanks and looking forward to the explanation.”
Earlier this year, Vitality stopped giving a discount to members of Run/Walk for Life – a group of people who meet up three times a week to run or walk.
Another change in the system made it so that credit card users who earned points using their Discovery credit card could no longer convert their Discovery Miles into British Airways points, or SAA Voyager Miles, for flight discounts.
More from Twitter:
According to Vitality, TomTom has exited the wearable device market and subsequently rendered its platform obsolete.
Discovery has said health users could earn points to get discounts on new devices it did support. It supports the Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin and Huawei wearable devices that measure fitness, heart rates and movement.
Discovery should know better than to get between the healthy, Vitality crew and their points.
If you are in the market for a new fitness watch, it’s probably time you made the switch to the Apple Watch.
