When I think party, I think three-day hangover.
It’s one of the perks of being in one’s 30s.
It’s also one of the reasons that more and more people are switching to a booze-free lifestyle. While I’m not there yet (or ever will be, because wine is life), a couple of my friends have made the switch.
The biggest issue they face is having to dash off early, before it gets messy, or avoid the party altogether for fear of not getting on the same level as their drinking friends.
If you’re one of those people, then this might help you out a touch.
Mind Body Green‘s Lucy Rocca hasn’t had a drop of booze in two years, and has some tips for keeping the vibe up when your blood-alcohol content is way down.
Have a plan for the morning after
If you’re going to be staying the night at your party destination – a wedding, bachelors/ bachelorette or weekend away etc. – pack your running or yoga gear and head out into the wild.
While everyone else is suffering through that morning hangover, you’ll be stocking up on endorphins. Even if you aren’t staying over anywhere, having something to look forward to in the morning will provide extra motivation to stay sober.
Avoid people you don’t like
Only accept invites from friends that you actually like spending time with. If there is someone at the party who will drive you to drink, avoid them.
Remind yourself of all the money you’re saving
Drinks add up, so if you need a little motivation to stay away from them, do a little calculation in your head every time you don’t accept a shot of tequila.
Then buy yourself something nice. You’ve earned it.
Switch from alcohol to energy drinks
One of the reasons that we drink is to keep the party going. An energy drink is a great way to keep your energy levels up, and give you a bit of a buzz without the hangover.
Picking the right energy drink is key. Avoid ones that contain taurine, and avoid the crash by drinking something that’s sugar-free, whilst high caffeine content is also inadvisable.
Start by checking out a range offered by 28 Black, which comes in at only 10 milligrams of caffeine per ounce. That’s enough to keep you energised, but not enough to make you feel a little weird.
It also doesn’t contain taurine, which means that it comes in a range of flavours, including some excellent sugar-free options.
Yep, taurine is the reason that all energy drinks taste the same.
It’s the perfect alternative when you want to party hard, but don’t want to feel like death in the morning.
Because giving up booze shouldn’t mean giving up fun.
Party on, party people.
