Swastikas Spotted Around Bloemfontein Spread On Social Media [Videos]

The swastika, a symbol synonymous with Nazism, has been showing up in and around Bloemfontein.

It’s no secret that South Africa has its fair share of racists.

But, with the exception of the Adam Catzaveloses and Steve Hofmeyrs out there, they usually know better than to outright declare themselves.

Over the weekend, two videos from Bloemfontein started doing the rounds, and at first, it seemed like some people were allegedly comfortable enough to proudly display their affiliation with Nazism.

IOL reports that on Sunday, a video started trending on Twitter showing a man eating his Wimpy breakfast in a full Nazi uniform, complete with swastika armband:

Well, that’s disturbing.

Even more disturbing is this footage of a Nazi flag being flown outside of a gathering just outside of Bloem:

Before you panic, though, there might be an explanation:

Wimpy responded to the incident saying: “We’ve been made aware of a video showing a customer depicting Nazi insignia – eating at one of our Bloemfontein Wimpy restaurants. We take matters of this nature this very seriously and are investigating this.

It seems like the customer may have been participating in a World War II Operation Barbarossa commemoration event that took place this weekend in the area. We’re confirming the nature of the event and are immediately investigating this matter.”

The World War II Operation Barbarossa Commemoration is an annual event that pays tribute to the failure of the German troops to defeat Soviet forces, often seen as a crucial turning point in the war.

If the man was participating in the commemoration, he might want to consider the implications of walking around in full Nazi uniform, especially in South Africa…

…and especially in the Free State.
