It’s no secret that conditions inside prisons like Pollsmoor leave much to be desired.
If you know the right people, though, and you wield a little power, some of South Africa’s other prisons can be far more accommodating.
Take Durban’s Westville Prison, for example, which is under the spotlight after two videos emerged, showing convicted killer Ruwain Meer living it up.
Meer is serving a life sentence after being found guilty of a double murder, and he features prominently in the videos, displaying more questionable life choices.
Over to IOL:
Meer’s high life in prison was exposed this week when a video showing him dancing and snorting what appears to be cocaine made its way on social media. The hired hitman who it seems has in fact gained weight in prison cavorts with fellow inmates while the tunes of Heavy D’s “While we found love” blasts in the background.
I would say his weight gain isn’t of that much importance, but we move along.
The first offence is that inmates aren’t allowed to own cellphones, and the second offence is the dancing.
Observe:
In response to the videos, the Department of Justice and Correctional Services has moved Meer, as well as the other man who features, to Kokstad Super Max Correctional Centre, known as Embongeni.
Talk about a case of the LCs the next day.
We did mention multiple videos, so here’s the second:
Meer has a history of poor decision-making and cocaine use, with the 2009 double murder he is convicted of stemming from a “cocaine party” he hosted with fellow convicted murderer, Priyen Naidu.
