When former Major League Baseball star David Ortiz was shot at a bar and nightclub in the Dominican Republic, you knew it wasn’t a random act of violence.
Security footage shows Ortiz being shot in the back, with the attempted hit carried out by two men on a motorcycle. There were also two more groups of people waiting in cars nearby, which shows how sophisticated the entire plan of attack was.
Still, they failed in their one job, which was killing Ortiz, who is currently recovering from his wounds in intensive care in Boston.
First up, here’s the security cam footage of the moment Ortiz was shot:
Since Sunday’s shooting, prosecutors say they’ve made big strides. The Guardian reports:
Oliver Moisés Mirabal Acosta, who was captured Tuesday night in the town of Mao in the northern Dominican Republic, was driving a grey Hyundai Accent before mounting the bike driven by 25-year-old Eddy Vladimir Féliz Garcia [below], the court document said.
The document also said the two men were seen on security camera footage talking with other people in the Accent and another Hyundai in a nearby street before the shooting at 9:20pm on Sunday…
The document also reveals ineptitude, saying the driver was captured after he skidded and fell off his bike as the pair tried to flee.
Witnesses to the shooting kicked and punched Eddy repeatedly before police arrived, which is where those injuries above arose.
His lawyer claims that Eddy had no idea the man on the back of his bike was going to commit a crime, and was merely an innocent motorcycle taxi driver.
According to Forbes, a total of six arrests have been made, with one suspect still at large.
The shooting of former Red Sox star David Ortiz was coordinated by a group of seven men who intended to collect nearly $8,000 to kill him, authorities said in a press conference Wednesday…
The Domincan Republic’s chief prosecutor Jean Alain Rodríguez said authorities are trying to locate whoever ordered the hit.
“Nobody involved in this lamentable episode will remain in impunity, not even the material or intellectual author,” Rodríguez said.
Given that Ortiz has a sizeable fortune stashed away (some estimates put his net worth at more than $50 million), it seems like those hitmen were short-changed.
Then again, judging by the outcome, you get what you pay for.
The shooting doesn’t reflect very well on the Caribbean nation, coming in the wake of that hotel, where guests keep dying under mysterious circumstances.
