The mind boggles.
A while back, Steve Hofmeyr had a real hissy fit about MultiChoice choosing not to carry any of his content, which means that you won’t be seeing the ‘singer’ on any of the DStv channels.
Steve promptly drove over his decoder and trashed his DStv dish, and offered a R10 000 reward to “one lucky winner” who did the same and posted a video on Facebook before June 1.
We’ve yet to hear anything about Steve declaring a winner and forking out that cash, but this chap below must surely be in pole position.
Meet Johan, who started a Facebook page called ‘Johan vir Steve Hofmeyr’. He nipped in just before the June 1 deadline, posting this on May 31.
I am almost 100% sure this is a piss-take, but you judge for yourself:
De-worsed. Get it? So it’s a play on the words ‘divorce’ and…never mind, you get it.
That’s some pretty decent production value, which is far more than we can say for this family.
So why are we saying that this hasn’t stopped business from booming? Well, the latest numbers are in, with this below from MyBroadband:
MultiChoice is set to release its financial results for the year ended 31 March 2019, which will show that the company made a trading profit of around R7 billion.
The company said its trading profit is expected to be between 9% (R0.6 billion) and 13% (R0.8 billion) higher than the prior year’s reported R6.3 billion.
On an organic basis – reflecting results on a constant currency basis – trading profit is expected to be between 24% (R1.5 billion) and 30% (R1.9 billion) higher.
The improved financial performance, MultiChoice said, is mainly driven by solid DStv subscriber growth and a reduction in losses in the “Rest of Africa” segment.
I suppose the impact of Steve’s ‘destroy your decoder’ spiel would only be felt in the following year’s financials, but the saying ‘farting into the wind’ comes to mind.
Should we have a quick look at what Steve’s been up to on Twitter?
Business as usual, then.
