Every time convicted racist Vicki Momberg appears in court, she manages to shoot herself in the foot.
On a scale of one to that time she rocked up wearing cornrows (still my personal favourite), I’d give her antics in the High Court in Johannesburg earlier this morning a solid seven.
She’s somehow managed to fall out with another set of lawyers, in what can only be described as a spectacularly stupid outburst.
Here’s TimesLIVE:
On Tuesday morning, Momberg returned to the court with her recently appointed new legal team, advocate Anesh Sukdeo and attorney Wesley Rogers…
While her lawyers tried to explain that they would not be willing to launch an application to remove reporters from the courtroom, Momberg stood up in the dock and began addressing the judge herself.
“The media have endangered my life … there’s no respect from the media,” she told the judge, stating that some media had published her contact details in the past.
Her defence advocate, Sukdeo, tried to apologise to the judge for the outburst, and said that Momberg had claimed she was traumatised by the media coverage of the case, and felt endangered.
This resulted in Momberg once again interrupting, asking the court if she could represent herself.
At that point, if I was one of her lawyers, I would have happily packed my briefcase and been on my way.
Let’s take a look at her storming out:
The proceedings have just adjourned as #VickiMomberg storms out of the court, she’s demanded that journalists be kicked out. She says, “The media has endangered my life, they’ve no respect. The court then adjourned to give Momberg a chance to think through her rash outburst, but she clearly wasn’t budging.
Those poor lawyers had now had enough:
…Rogers returned to the court, loudly saying: “Mandate is terminated, we’re out of here.” He confirmed that he and Sukdeo had been representing Momberg pro bono (free of charge).
His reputation was more important than money, the attorney said.
“The tail does not wag the f****ing dog,” Rogers said to prosecutor Jacqui Drotsky.
PRO BONO, people. Momberg just sacked the lawyers that were defending her for free.
Let’s see the exact moment Rogers and the legal team had enough:

After all of that, Momberg then had a change of heart, reports News24:
She said she was “happy” to proceed with advocate Anesh Sukdeo, but not his instructing attorney Wesley Rogers.
“I have an attorney that has not acted appropriately and has been abusive and I will be taking that matter further,” she told the court.
She then again changed her mind and said Rogers could be on record, while Sukdeo argued her case. This is Momberg’s sixth legal representative on record…
Rogers, however, told the court that the there had been a relationship breakdown between him and Momberg and that he, therefore he could not, ethically, act on her behalf…
During the lunch adjustment, Rogers told Momberg: “No more contact with me, thank you. Go away.”
I think Rogers speaks on behalf of all of us.
Having served a short stint in jail, during which time she was very badly behaved, Momberg is now out on bail whilst her appeal proceedings are underway.
This isn’t the first time she’s fallen out with her legal team, of course, and previous lawyers have sometimes walked out mid-trial due to her “vague or ridiculous instructions”.
If she keeps this up, we may have to rename asking for the manager at a restaurant to ‘doing a Momberg’.
As an added bonus, Momberg was also hostile to the media present at this morning’s proceedings, threatening to sue one photographer and slap another in the face.
