Last week, two armed robbers entered Sea Point High School during an exam session, assaulted a teacher, and made off with 50 cellphones.
CCTV footage of the robbers entering the school has helped police to catch one of the culprits.
Plot twist – it’s a student at the school.
TimesLIVE reports that police found six cellphone covers belonging to the stolen phones when they searched his home.
“Our investigations in the brazen robbery perpetrated at a high school in Sea Point on Wednesday morning led us to a 15-year-old suspect, who was arrested this morning on a charge of armed robbery,” Western Cape police spokesperson Lt-Col Andrè Traut said in a statement on Sunday.
“The suspect, who is from Philippi East, is a scholar at the same school.”
IOL reports that Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schäfer wants the suspects to face the “full might of the law”.
“The police and the WCED’s Safe Schools were contacted. The WCED’s Specialised Support directorate has been informed and the school has a counsellor and a psychologist on site for learners who require support and counselling,” she said following the robbery.
The suspect is due to appear in court this week in Cape Town while police track down his accomplice.
Pretty brazen move to rob your own school, and it’s one that has backfired rather dramatically.
