Look, we all know that a billion is a hell of a lot more than a million.
It’s the difference between the people on Forbes’ Richest People List and, say, South Africa’s banking CEOs.
All rich, but some are definitely richer than others.
But do you really know how much more a billion is compared to a million?
According to LifeHacker, humans have trouble conceptualising this.
While living and evolving in a so-called state-of-nature, our paleolithic ancestors had no need (i.e. no environmental pressures) to develop such a capacity. Back then, and prior to the advent of a formal numbering system, early humans only really needed to get a basic sense of small batches of quantities, like the number of people in the clan, or how many animals might occupy a certain area.
That’s good news for folks like Jeff Bezos, because if you could actually wrap your head around how much he earns, you’d probably start a revolution.
