On Saturday night (or Sunday morning South African time), Andy Ruiz Jr. gave men with paunches around the world hope, pulling off a stunning upset to defeat Anthony Joshua and become heavyweight world champion.
The 29-year-old won with a seventh-round TKO at Madison Square Garden, having dropped Joshua twice in the third round and twice more in the seventh.
You can’t really fault referee Mike Griffin for stopping the fight when he did, with Ruiz Jr. dominating proceedings, and Joshua looking increasingly shaky on his feet.
Here are the full bout highlights, with the stoppage at the nine-minute mark:
Quite a beating.
So how did Anthony Joshua jinx himself, other than underestimating his opponent?
Enter the Drake Curse, which just won’t go away. In case you’re playing catch-up, the musician has a long history of appearing in photos with sports stars shortly before things go wrong.
We touched on some of the more recent, infamous examples here. If you can’t be bothered to click there, just know that the curse’s victims include the likes of Ozil, Aguero, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Lukaku, Pogba, Kevin De Bruyne, Conor McGregor and Serena Williams.
Joshua clearly thought he was going to break the mould, but this tweet from March 21 has not aged well at all:
Jürgen Klopp might be singing his heart out, but Joshua and his fans are not.
Social media was full of posts like this:
At least Joshua was humble in defeat, posting this in the hours following the bout:
Basketball fans will also know that Drake’s beloved Toronto Raptors are currently facing the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. The best-of-seven showdown (the first team to win four matches is crowned NBA champions) is tied at 1-1, with the Warriors winning earlier this morning.
Drake has also been grabbing headlines there, to do with his antics after Game One. Here’s France24:
Drake taunted Golden State stars Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson during the Canadian club’s victory over the defending champion Warriors to open the NBA Finals.
Drake, a Toronto native who is a courtside regular at Raptors games, exchanged words with Warriors forward Draymond Green as Golden State walked off the court following Toronto’s 118-109 victory Thursday in the best-of-seven championship series opener.
Drake was wearing an old Raptors jersey of Curry’s father, Dell Curry, who played for the Raptors and retired in Toronto. He picked at Stephen Curry’s hair when the two had a brief courtside chat during a timeout.
Sure, we’ll see the video:
Given Drake’s history, and the fact that the Warriors have the mighty Steph Curry, I guess it’s all over for the Raptors already.
