Here are the events in the Moby book saga thus far.
Moby released an uncomfortable-to-read memoir titled Then It Fell Apart.
What Moby didn’t know was that the title foreshadowed the memoir’s reception by both the public and the people he wrote about.
It’s mostly a chronicle of the times that Moby managed to get women to sleep with him. It also contains some gratuitous name dropping, his (dark and creepy) thoughts when he couldn’t get women to sleep with him, and a detailed description of that time he made a sandwich.
One of the parts that combine both name dropping and trying to get women to sleep with him is what caused it all to fall apart.
Moby claimed to have had a relationship with a then very young Natalie Portman. She denied this publicly and vehemently.
Now, The Daily Beast, with this:
Moby announced Wednesday night that he’s canceling the rest of his book tour days after Natalie Portman publicly dismissed claims in his new memoir that the two dated. “I’m going to go away for awhile. But before I do I want to apologize again, and to say clearly that all of this has been my own fault,” the singer wrote in an Instagram post.
“I am the one who released the book without showing it to the people I wrote about. I’m the one who posted defensively and arrogantly. I’m the one who behaved inconsiderately and disrespectfully, both in 2019 and in 1999. There is obviously no one else to blame but me. Thank you, and I’m sorry. Moby.”
The bit about ‘defensive and arrogant’ posting refers to an Instagram post in which Moby writes “it hurts to be lied about” in response to Portman.
The public backlash has clearly turned things around for him.
According to a statement on his website, “Moby is canceling all upcoming public appearances for the foreseeable future. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. All tickets will be refunded at the point of purchase, and Moby is happy to provide signed bookplates to everyone who bought tickets to these events.”
I’m sure all five of those people will be very grateful for their signed bookplates.
