Five fishermen have been rescued after their boat struck a whale about six-and-a-half nautical miles off the coast of Lambert’s Bay.
According to the report by the NSRI, which quotes NSRI Lambert’s Bay station commander Avril Mocke, the open fishing boat began to take on water after the collision, with the crew on board climbing onto a fishing boat that was nearby at the time.
The boat suffered a crack to the hull, and was then towed back to Lambert’s Bay by one of the NSRI’s rescue crafts.
The good news is that none of the five men was injured in the incident, and the even better news is that the whale is believed to have continued on its way.
I guess the only real loser, then, was the boat. Well played, nature.
Perhaps those fishermen should be thankful that they didn’t collide with those orcas causing havoc with the local shark population, although they seem to favour the False Bay area.
