They say that sport is a great leveller, and yesterday was proof of that.
Aston Villa fans celebrated wildly at the final whistle of yesterday’s Championship play-off final at Wembley, with their team securing a return to the Premier League.
Also celebrating wildly was Prince William, a long-time Villa fan, who embraced former Villa striker John Carew when promotion was secured.
For some context, the play-off is widely regarded as the most lucrative match in football, with the financial rewards nearing £170 million.
Let’s see the prince’s reaction:

For any footie fans who missed the drama (SuperSport no longer broadcasts Championship matches), here are the highlights:
Almost as dramatic as the last-gasp winner that saw Charlton defeat Sunderland in the League One play-off final on Sunday. Make sure you watch that opening own goal howler, and then skip ahead to 1:15 for the late drama:
On behalf of Newcastle fans right around the world, HA!
The second season of Sunderland ‘Til I Die is going to be glorious viewing.
Back to Prince William, though, and why he supports Villa, Here’s PEOPLE:
The prince explained why he follows Villa during an interview before a Cup Final four years ago. “A long time ago at school, I got into football big-time. I was looking around for clubs. All my friends at school were either Man United or Chelsea fans and I didn’t want to follow the run-of-the-mill teams,” he said, according to the Birmingham Mail.
“I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments. I have got friends of mine who support Aston Villa and one of the first FA Cup games I went to was Bolton vs. Aston Villa back in 2000. It was the atmosphere, the camaraderie and I really felt that there was something I could connect with.”
As someone who supports a bang average team, I can relate to the “emotional rollercoaster moments”. It really does make the odd win all that much sweeter.
In case you’re wondering, Prince Harry is said to support Arsenal, whilst the Queen roots for West Ham United.
