Earlier this morning, Adam Catzavelos appeared in the Randburg District Court to face charges of crimen injuria.
Legal experts are divided on whether or not he will be successfully prosecuted, although there was no shortage of media attention both inside and outside the courtroom.
In case you’re wondering about his emsemble, he went with a scarf and sunnies on his way in:
Probably a good move to leave that now infamous hat at home.
His appearance was rather brief, with this from the Citizen:
…the case was postponed to June 13.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Louw said Catzavelos was charged with crimen injuria and that the case was postponed to allow him to seek legal representation “because he was alone in court”.
Louw said the charge was laid by the chairperson of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng, Mandisa Mashego.
Video from inside the courtroom shows that Catzavelos wasn’t all that keen on engaging with the media that were present:

You don’t know where to look? Look into the camera, like you did when you filmed that video in Greece.
He wasn’t in a chatty mood on the way out of the courtroom, either:

In addition to the charges laid by the EFF, the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has also opened a hate speech case against Catzavelos.
Here’s that case, via a tweet from SAHRC spokesperson Buang Jones:
Jones said that the SAHRC will now wait for a date to be set by the clerk of the Equality Court.
Whilst I have no sympathy for someone who is clearly and obviously a racist, at what point does the punishment stop fitting the crime?
He’s been booted from the family business, banned from the premises of the school his children attend, and will forever be known as that dickhead with the shitty hat on the beach in Greece.
Still, as long as there are political points to be scored, and a public baying for blood, he’ll be held to account.
