The on-field action between the Stormers and the Crusaders may have ended in high drama, with a contentious late penalty decision for the home side securing a 19-19 draw, but worse was still to come for the Canterbury outfit.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, it is alleged that members of the team verbally abused patrons inside the McDonald’s located at the top of Long Street.
The incident first came to light when Twitter user @adamlennoxx shared a video to his account, showing an altercation:
IF YOU WANNA BE QUEERPHOBIC WE WILL RECORD YOU SINCE YOU RECORDED US FOR YOUR JOKE. Long st mc Donald’s. pic.twitter.com/Uz2pRnh4XS

(Adam has since made his tweets private, so you can longer watch the video.)
That was then followed by another tweet outlining what he alleged had occurred:
Sport24 spoke with Jeremy Pelser, a member of the group that was allegedly verbally abused, who gave this account:
Via email, the man claimed that members of the Crusaders squad had been filming him and two of his friends, saying that they “looked funny”, and that when confronted, the squad members responded with “homophobic slurs, limp wrists, and high pitched voices which were clearly in gest.”
Are we going to pretend that this doesn’t sound like the kind of behaviour we have seen from ‘macho blokes’ around the world, time and time again?
Still, the Crusaders have denied the accusations, issuing the following statement:
CCTV footage from the McDonald’s has now been requested, which should help shed light on exactly what transpired.
While the Crusaders are looking into the behaviour of their players, they may also want to chat about an incident from last weekend.
Another Twitter user shared her account of bumping into the Crusaders rugby team at Arcade last Saturday, and it’s also not a good look.
We have screenshot the thread below:
Picturing an elf punching Thanos. Moving on…
Way to endear yourselves to the good people of Cape Town, chaps.
The Crusaders have now made contact with one of the men from Saturday night’s McDonald’s confrontation.
Via their official Instagram account, they reached out to Alexandros Paterimos, who goes by ‘alxethelion’ on Instagram.
Via Alexandros’ Instagram story, we can see his reply:
A fair response by any measure.
That Instagram story also points out which players were involved.
Hopefully, the CCTV footage that McDonald’s provides can nail down exactly what happened, and the relevant authorities can then take things from there.
A word of advice to sporting teams headed to Cape Town in the near future – we won’t stand for your kak, so treat our people with some respect while you’re here.
