There’s no time to rest when your country’s unemployment rate is a whopping 27,6%, so it was straight back to business for Cyril Ramaphosa following his party’s election win.
Yesterday, Ramaphosa spoke at an investor conference in Johannesburg, which was hosted by the Goldman Sachs Group, and the president discussed Eskom, the economy, and land reform.
For those prone to panic, he sought to soothe the nerves, especially with regards to encouraging foreign investment. Here’s Fin24:
Ramaphosa, as he has repeatedly stated in the past, again said that land reform and expropriation without compensation would take place in an orderly manner, with no land grabs.
Foreign investors have “nothing to fear”, he said, and the government would not take land after asking them to invest in South Africa. He did not elaborate any further.
Ramaphosa said a reworked Expropriation Bill, which still has to go before the National Assembly, would lay out which kinds of land would be included in the expropriation process.
He said the government would be focusing, in part, on tracts of land owned by the state, particularly in urban areas where people need land to build homes.
Well, that should soothe the nerves a touch, right?
In case you want the legal ins and outs of where we stand, we ran through the latest land expropriation without compensation law changes back in March.
Ramaphosa was keen to stress that the ANC’s land reform policy would not threaten the economy, lead to food insecurity, or lower agricultural yields.
Perhaps we have learnt a little something from Uganda, then. If not, there’s always Zimbabwe.
If Cyril could just sort out Eskom, and the SABC, and SAA, and every single other SOE that is currently bleeding this country dry…
