Andrew Turnbull, pictured above, died in a high-speed car crash yesterday, on the R72 near Port Alfred in the direction of Kenton-On-Sea.
Turnbull first made news when a video of him allegedly assaulting his then-girlfriend, Chere Gray, was widely shared last year. He was released on bail on assault charges, and also faced separate drug and ammunition possession charges.
Before Turnbull’s accident yesterday, friend and car passenger Ryan Byrne posted video footage of the Jaguar hitting 260km/h. The time stamp on the video says 2:07PM, and the deadly head-on collision took place sometime between then and 2:30PM.
Byrne and Turnbull were killed in the crash – Byrne on the scene and Turnbull succumbing to his injuries today in hospital – when the Jaguar they were driving hit a Mercedes-Benz. The driver of the other vehicle was also killed.
Here’s the video of the speedometer reading, which also shows Turnbull’s distinctive tattoos:
This isn’t the first time that Turnbull has driven at such speeds. News24 have a screenshot from a video he posted six months ago, which shows him driving at excessive speeds on a public road:
Eastern Cape transport department spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie believes that the Jaguar’s driving speed may have played a role in the crash:
“A Mercedes Benz with two occupants, including the driver, was travelling from Port Alfred and collided with a Jaguar travelling from Kenton. The number of occupants in the Jaguar has not been confirmed,” Rantjie told DispatchLIVE.
“It’s alleged that driving at high speed may have contributed to the incident. Local authorities will continue with further investigations.”
Turnbull also paid a fine of R1 500 back in 2000 for speeding.
According to TimesLIVE, ex-girlfriend Gray posted her own tribute to Facebook:
The video that first brought Turnbull notoriety is said to have been filmed in August of last year, and shows him pinning Gray against a wall, before tossing her aside whilst the woman filming pleads with him to stop:
In his affidavit, Turnbull claimed that he “had grabbed Gray by the collar and reprimanded her after she had a “relapse” and went on a shopping spree and to nightclubs with his credit card”.
